Drafted on December 7, 1965, Rupolo attended Basic Training at Fort Lewis in Washington. As part of the 4th Infantry, he left on November 17, 1966 he went to Vietnam. Returning home November 17, 1967 with the Bronze Star (September 11, 1967) after having been transferred to A Co 2/22 Mechs 25th Infantry Division earlier that year (June 1967).
